Clear aligners and Invisalign®: how the process works

Clear aligners are a discreet way to straighten your teeth without traditional metal braces. They are made from clear, removable plastic, so most people barely notice them. Invisalign® is the best-known brand, and it is one of the systems we offer at Newton Leys Dental Clinic. Our dentists Ravi Chandarana and Jay Joshi are accredited Invisalign Go providers, and are also accredited providers of other aligner systems.

If you are wondering what actually happens, from the first appointment to the last, this guide takes you through it step by step.

Step 1: Your consultation and check-up

Treatment begins with a conversation. We ask what you would like to change about your smile, look at your teeth and gums, and take any X-rays or photographs we need. Healthy gums and teeth matter, so if you need a filling or a clean first, we will tell you and look after that before you start. You can read about our hygienist appointments if gum health is a concern.

We will also be honest about whether clear aligners suit your teeth. They work very well for many people, but some complex cases need a different approach, and we will explain your options either way.

Step 2: A digital scan, not messy putty

Instead of uncomfortable moulds, we use an intraoral scanner to create a detailed 3D digital model of your teeth. It takes only a few minutes and gives us the exact starting point for your treatment.

Step 3: See your planned result before you commit

Your scan is used to plan how each tooth will move, and the finished position is simulated in 3D before anything is ordered. This lets you see the smile you are working towards and ask questions. We will also give you a written estimate of the cost, and there is no pressure to decide on the day. You can see our prices on our fees page.

Step 4: Wearing your aligners

You receive a series of custom-made aligners. Each set moves your teeth a small amount, and you change to the next set at the interval we advise, usually every week or two. The aligners work best when you wear them for around 22 hours a day, taking them out only to eat, drink anything other than water, and clean your teeth.

Some teeth benefit from small tooth-coloured attachments, which help the aligners grip. Mild tightness when you start a new set is normal and usually settles within a few days.

Step 5: Regular check-ups along the way

We see you at intervals during treatment to check your teeth are moving as planned and to give you your next sets. If anything needs adjusting, we can do it at these visits.

Step 6: Retainers to keep your new smile

Once your teeth are in their new positions, you will need retainers to hold them there. Teeth naturally try to drift back, so wearing your retainers as advised is the most important part of keeping your result.

How long does treatment take?

It depends on how far your teeth need to move. Some straightforward cases take a few months, while more involved ones take a year or longer. We will give you an estimate once we have planned your treatment.

Is it right for you?

Clear aligners are popular with adults who want straighter teeth without visible braces. They need commitment, because they only work if you wear them. If you are not sure, a consultation will tell you whether they are a good fit and what else we could offer. Clear aligners are part of our wider cosmetic dentistry options.
